We analyze the most recent posts on the account (up to 12) and calculate the average number of likes and comments per post. The engagement rate formula is:
Engagement Rate = (Avg. Likes + Avg. Comments) / Total Followers × 100%
For example, if an account has 10,000 followers and their posts average 500 likes and 20 comments, the engagement rate is: (500 + 20) / 10,000 × 100 = 5.2%.
Larger accounts naturally get lower engagement rates because their audience is broader and less personal. A 0.5% rate on an account with 50 million followers represents millions of interactions — far more impactful than 10% on a 500-follower account.
Our calculator adjusts the rating based on 6 follower tiers so the result is fair and meaningful regardless of account size.
Under 1K followers: Excellent 10%+, Great 6%+, Average 3%+. Small accounts typically have tight-knit audiences that engage heavily.
1K – 10K (Micro): Excellent 8%+, Great 5%+, Average 3%+. Micro-influencers often have the strongest engagement due to niche, loyal audiences.
10K – 100K: Excellent 5%+, Great 3%+, Average 1.5%+. Growing accounts start to see a natural dip as the audience widens.
100K – 1M: Excellent 3%+, Great 1.5%+, Average 0.8%+. At this level, maintaining high engagement takes consistently strong content.
1M – 10M: Excellent 2%+, Great 1%+, Average 0.5%+. Major influencers and brands operate in this tier.
10M+ (Mega): Excellent 1%+, Great 0.5%+, Average 0.2%+. At celebrity scale, even 0.5% represents millions of real interactions — that's considered strong.
