How to Build Your Instagram: Advice From Entrepreneur Lewis Howes

December 19, 2018

Why should you listen to advice from entrepreneur Lewis Howes? Lewis has over 850,000 followers on Instagram, gets hundreds of likes and comments on every post, and he’s verified.

Instagram is just one of the many platforms that have helped his successful career, and it’s a social media platform that he believes in. The reason being that through Instagram, Lewis has been able to reach thousands of people, get tens of thousands of dollars in sales, and get more people onto his email list. He has been able to connect with people like Jake Paul, Kobe Bryant, and Mike Posner.

Earlier in the year, he hosted a webinar called “10 Steps to Get Your Next 10k Followers On Instagram” and he shared such valuable information that we wanted the opportunity to share with you some of his key points.

If you apply his advice, work hard, and do what you need to do, you too can reach his level! Let’s get into some of his main points.

1. Optimize your profile

Your bio

Who is Lewis Howes? From his bio alone, we can tell you that he is a talk show host, a former pro athlete, a New York Times Bestselling Author, and that he hosts a podcast that ranks in the world’s top 50 podcasts called “The School of Greatness.”

Your Instagram bio is a place where you can establish trust and credibility.

Profile some of the things you've been working on, your successes, and who you are. All while sounding like yourself. Do this in order for people to grow some level of trust right when they get to your profile.

Bonus tip: Add emojis!

Your profile picture

Your profile picture on Instagram should be a professional picture. By professional, we mean, it should be a high quality picture where you can see your face. People trust faces because it helps them humanize you.

You want it to be a nice picture, but you don’t want to make it too professional. Have one that represents your brand. You don’t need to be wearing a suit, crossing your arms, and wearing a serious expression.

Your link

Your link is what leads people to the thing that you’re promoting on Instagram. Whether it’s your product, a specific piece of content, or your overall website, you want to pick the right one. Pick the one that corresponds with your goal. For example, if you want more email subscribers, link to a lead magnet, or if you’re promoting a new course, link to the landing page. Link to something valuable.

You want to make a good first impression, so take the time to figure out what you want to do with your profile.

2. Study analyticsperson using Android smartphone

It’s important to study your Instagram analytics, which you can access when you switch your account to a business account, because it lets you become aware of what’s going on in your account. You can look at your statistics and find out what’s working, what’s not, and what’s happening when you do what.

There are multiple things that Lewis Howes studies with his Instagram analytics, and here are a few of them.

% growth day over day

There will be times in your business when you reach a plateau, and Instagram analytics let you study why that’s happening. You want to be growing your brand, business, etc., constantly to reach new people, make more sales, and reach your goals. Study these analytics to know what you can keep doing and what you should change.

# of likes and comments

By studying your likes and comments, you can see which posts are working and which aren’t. When you realize that something’s not working in such a dramatic contrast to something else, then get rid of it. Focus your attention and skills on what works. Your likes and comments are going to vary, so be smart about what you’re getting rid of. Look at the time of day you’re posting, the things you’re saying, and how you’re showing your content.

# of profile visits and # of link clicks

While there are many reasons one might have a business account on Instagram, one main reason for everybody is to promote your main thing. Whether that’s a digital or physical product, coaching, a website, or a blog, you’re on Instagram to get people to buy or visit those links. You can study your analytics for those two areas, and make sure that people are clicking. If not, figure out how.

3. Engage and interact

On own content

The point of social media is to be social. If you want to keep your followers and continue to receive engagement you must engage back. It is pivotal to comment back, answer questions, and like comments.

People respect and adore you more when you take time out of your busy day to answer their comments, DM’s, and like the things that they tag you in. In your own content, it’s public, so make sure you’re interacting there all of the time.

On other people’s content

“If you want fans, you have to be a fan first.” - Austin Kleon

While it’s important that you interact within your own content, engaging on other people’s content is just as important. You want to show up for others, show that you’re there to support your friends and strangers, and give value when you can.

Lewis suggests:

“What not to do

  • “Cool”

  • “Nice post”

  • Don’t like every single followers comment on someone else’s profile”

Don’t be generic!

4. Add value wherever you canperson holding light bulb

On Instagram posts alone, you can upload a picture, carousels, and short videos. However, you also want to utilize Instagram stories and Instagram live. You can record short clips, use the stickers that allow your followers to interact, and answer questions in real time when you’re live.

Instagram has numerous ways for you to add value, and this is a point that you’re going to hear from everyone, not just Lewis.

Finding ways to add constant value is one of the most important things that you can do for you business or brand.
